Construction:
1. Take the parallel piece and align the background 3" triangle on it.  The parallel does not have the dog ears cut so there will be a space at the end.  Don't worry about it since it gets cut off also.

2.  Sew the two small triangles of background to the colored triangle making a rectangle.
3. Sew the two rectangles together to make a square.
4.  Repeat making four squares.

 

5. Arrange and sew the squares together to make the pictured pattern.
